Broward Center Announces Two New Exciting Virtual Programs

The public can learn more and meet the faculty at a virtual open house on June 6

After two decades of presenting one of the most popular theater camps, the Broward Center for the Performing Arts and The Performance Project School of the Arts have pulled together their resources for an awesome four-week virtual experience with Summer Theater Camp 2020. The Broward Center is also offering a one-week virtual Broadway Intensive in two sessions this summer.

To participate, students must have access to a laptop or computer, be able to use the ZOOM platform and have a space where they can sing and dance freely.

Summer Theater Camp

Under the direction of The Performance Project School of the Arts’ Executive Director Nina Felice, the virtual four-week camp program will offer students the chance to study singing, dancing and acting while rehearsing for a Broadway revue. Campers will have a solo part and participate in several group numbers in addition to enjoying theater games and arts & crafts before the camp culminates in final performances live streamed from the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.

Three different age appropriate groups have been designed:

  • Disney Showcase – Children between ages seven and nine will enjoy acting, singing, dance and arts and crafts as part of a Disney Showcase. Campers will take a journey through classic Disney shows including Tangled, Jungle Book, Frozen, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, Mary Poppins, High School Musical and The Descendants.
  • A Stephen Schwartz Showcase – Designed for ages 10-13, this program celebrates talented composer Stephen Schwartz as campers sing and dance their way through songs from his blockbusters, including Pippin, Wicked, The Prince of Egypt and The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
  • Young Professionals Group – For ages 14-18, this collaborative program combines the campers input and talent to create a show that will serve as an outlet of expression toward the events that have been missed in these past few months such as prom, graduation and birthdays. The camp will include master classes and special guests and close with a showcase featuring songs from an array of movie, TV and Broadway musicals such as The Prom, Fame, Moulin Rouge, Rent, Next to Normal and Mamma Mia!

Enrollment is now open for Session One which has camp sessions Friday, June 22 through Friday, July 10 followed by a show week from July 13 – 17. Classes for all campers will continue throughout show week. The daily camp schedule includes: morning hang out and teacher check-in from 10:15 to 10:30 a.m.; Zoom classes and rehearsals from 10:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.; and a one-hour lunch break at noon. Tuition for Session One is $495. Registration for all camps is available online at BrowardCenter.org/virtualprograms, by email at registrar@BrowardCenter.org or by phone at 954.414.6904.

While the format and dates of a late summer session have not been announced, students may enroll for Summer Theater Camp Session Two with a no-obligation registration via a waitlist at browardcenter.org/summer-theater-camp.
