Broward County Housing Authority celebrated a milestone with the groundbreaking of Tequesta Reserve, a new independent housing community exclusively for frail, low-income seniors.

Located at 4891 Griffin Road in Davie, the 84,000 square-foot, six-story building will feature 76 private dwellings, with 46 one-bedroom apartments and 30 two-bedroom apartments. This project is specifically purposed to provide a permanently affordable shelter for economically vulnerable seniors.  The much-needed housing will offer on-site management and access to resident services personnel to access off-site community resources.  It promises to be a safe and well-rounded modern living experience for seniors of limited income.

Other amenities include a computer lab and community room, dedicated covered drop-off area, EV car charging station and convenient parking.

“With Tequesta Reserve, we made the impossible possible.  A new permanently affordable residential community with financial and operational safeguards in place to sustain quality for generations,” said Parnell Joyce, CEO of the Broward County Housing Authority. “And in a few months look forward to welcoming a fortunate group of South Florida senior citizens who have been on a waiting list and eager to move in.”

Tequesta Reserve converted a previous water retention area into a $42 million dollar state of the art community.

The Town of Davie supported the development plan and amended zoning to create a Traffic Oriented Corridor, which allowed Tequesta Reserve to increase the number of units previously allowed per acre.

“We are all aware of the increasingly rising costs of housing and are thrilled to soon provide a safe, stable and affordable option for the elderly in our community,” said Town of Davie Vice Mayor Caryl Hattan. “This project is so vital that the Town of Davie offered both an affordable and an elderly exemption offsetting permit fees.”

“The Town of Davie has a special place in my heart, and I am committed to helping take care of the elderly in our community,” said Broward County Housing Authority Board Chair John Loos III. “We’re so grateful to our many partners who join us in bringing this community to life. It was a group effort to get this over the goal line.”
