Employee’s Sandwich Creation Makes it onto TooJay’s Menu

Florida’s Favorite Deli Celebrates with LTO Sandwiches for National Sandwich Month

No dish is more versatile than the sandwich and no restaurant does sandwiches better than TooJay’s. Serving 1.5 million sandwiches a year at its 28 restaurants throughout Florida, the New York-style deli is celebrating National Sandwich Month by adding a tempting new sandwich created by an employee and two equally irresistible sandwiches, all available through September 16.

In preparation for the annual August tribute to sandwiches, TooJay’s held its first-ever recipe contest, challenging its more than 1,200 employees to create a great new sandwich for the menu. The winning Warm Antipasto Sandwich was created by Vernon H., a cook with TooJay’s for the past 19 years from the Lake Mary restaurant. The flavorful combination of ham, salami, provolone cheese, pepperoncini, artichoke hearts, roasted red peppers and Greek olives is baked in crusty French bread and topped with melted provolone and balsamic glaze, served with coleslaw and a dill pickle. The generously sized sandwich is also available as a salad starter.

“The contest was a fun way to engage our team members and sparked a lot of creativity,” said TooJay’s President and CEO Maxwell Piet. “We are very proud of what Vernon has created for our guests. The best talent and ideas often come from our team members. I look forward to our guests enjoying these delicious recipes.”

In addition to the new Warm Antipasto Sandwich, two new Limited Time Offers top the sandwich menu through September 16. The Italiano, with ham, Genoa salami, provolone, lettuce, tomato and red onion, piled high on your choice of bread and served with Italian dressing. The Mediterranean Turkey features feta cheese, black olives, tomatoes, arugula and cucumbers tossed in Greek dressing all rolled in TooJay’s hand-sliced turkey, piled high on your choice of bread and topped with a schmear of hummus.

Fun TooJay’s fact: The Italiano and the Mediterranean Turkey both show off TooJay’s iconic roll.  In the early days of the brand, a member of the deli team began rolling the sandwiches to ensure all of the items were evenly mixed throughout. TooJay’s has been rolling their sandwiches ever since!

TooJay’s popular hand-crafted sandwich mainstays are served on a choice of freshly baked artisan rye, wheat, challah bread or a brioche bun, with a side of coleslaw and a dill pickle. Here are three of the timeless favorites available year-round:

  • The Reuben

Classic, hot, sliced-to-order corned beef, sauerkraut and melted Swiss cheese with home-style Russian dressing, grilled to perfection between slices of rye bread baked fresh in TooJay’s bakery make the Reuben a fan favorite. Reuben Fun Fact: The origin of this sandwich is a source of debate to this day, one source claiming that Arnold Reuben invented the sandwich in 1914 at his namesake restaurant in New York City, and the other claiming that wholesaler grocer Reuben Kulakofsky created the sandwich in Omaha, Neb., in the 1920s.

  • Hot Pastrami Sandwich

Nothing says deli more than the perfectly prepared, traditionally seasoned, cured and piled high pastrami served at TooJay’s. The Hot Pastrami Sandwich features tender, smoky, sliced-to-order hot pastrami served on fresh rye bread. Pastrami Fun Fact: The first pastrami sandwich in the U.S. dates back to 1887, created by a Lithuanian butcher in New York named Sussman Volk. He credited the recipe to a friend who traveled back to Romania and gave him the recipe in exchange for helping him store his luggage.

  • Triple J Sandwich

Hand trimmed and steamed corned beef, roast beef, turkey, and Swiss cheese rolled with coleslaw and home-style Russian dressing make up TooJay’s Triple J Sandwich. Deli Fun Fact: “Delicatessen” comes from the German word “delikatesse” which means “delicious things to eat.”
