Presented by the Japan Foundation’s Traveling Exhibitions Program in conjunction with the Consulate-General of Japan in Miami and Miami-Dade College, “The Dolls of Japan: Shapes of Prayer, Embodiments of Love” will be on display from April 25 to June 1 at Miami-Dade College’s North Campus, located at 11380 N.W. 27th Ave. in Miami.
“The Dolls of Japan” will be exhibited in the North Gallery in Building 5. Gallery hours are 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. from Tuesday to Thursday. Admission is free.
After its month-long stay at the Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts in China, “The Dolls of Japan” exhibition will travel to Miami to showcase Japan’s representative dolls, including: Hina ningyo (Girls’ Festival dolls) and Gogatsu ningyo (Boys’ Day dolls), which have their origins in ancient customs; dolls connected to traditional performing arts like noh, bunraku and kabuki; regional dolls from throughout the country; and “creative dolls” produced by contemporary craftspeople.
“The Dolls of Japan” exhibition exemplifies Japan’s centuries-old tradition of doll-making and illustrates its unique culture of dolls, each of which has its own distinct purpose and meaning. Consisting of 75 works, the exhibition features authentic Japanese dolls that are crafted with time-honored methods.
Japanese dolls are characterized by their vibrant colors and beautiful costumes, representing the rich history of Japanese pageantry. Additionally, the faces of the dolls are carefully sculpted from pulverized oyster shell to achieve delicate and serene facial expressions.
